Station 5

As part of our commitment to provide safe, reliable service to all our customers, Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation (RG&E), in conjunction with our parent company – AVANGRID, is updating the delivery system in our service areas. These upgrades comply with new reliability requirements. While making investments to help reliably meet the community’s energy needs, we are working closely with our neighbors to ensure that all improvements are performed with minimal disruption to the environment and the communities we serve.

Project Purpose and Need

Aging infrastructure and more stringent safety standards have highlighted the need to upgrade RG&E’s Station 5 facility at Lower Falls. Station 5 is unique in that it is both an electric substation as well as a hydroelectric generating facility, that creates clean, renewable electric energy for our valued RG&E customers.

Based on the condition and age of the existing electrical substation, a new state-of-the-art substation facility is being installed. This Substation Modernization Project will improve the overall resiliency of the electric grid while simultaneously upgrading the technological components of the substation.

In addition, this project allows full generating capacity of the station’s three (3) hydroelectric generators, which interconnect to the substation and subsequently the electric grid within the City of Rochester and Monroe County.

Project Scope

  • Remove outdated electric substation equipment, which is all interior to the building.
  • Install new state-of-the-art electric substation equipment and components, including gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology and modern microprocessor-based control systems.
  • Modernize the electric substation and hydroelectric connections to continue serving thousands of residential and commercial customers across the region.
