RG&E Warns Customers of Potential Scammers
Utility taking every action possible to protect customers following report of scammers using hearing-impaired RG&E number
Company encourages customers to be alert and not use 1.800.962.3293
ROCHESTER, NY — March 15, 2023 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) recently learned that the number listed on our bills and website to assist hearing-impaired customers was being used by a potential scammer. RG&E has discontinued that number and replaced it. We are updating all documents, including our monthly bills, where the number previously appeared, and we are conducting a full audit of our customer service numbers to ensure they are secure.
“This is a national issue. It’s not just impacting Rochester, said Brian Harrell, vice president of Physical and Cyber Security at AVANGRID. “According to the FBI, customers lost $10.3 billion from online and phone scams, with cyber criminals looking to take your sensitive information.”
“We want our customers to know that we are taking action and we are committed to securing their personal information,” said Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of RG&E and NYSEG.
We urge our hearing-impaired customers in need of assistance not to use the previous number 1.800.962.3293. That number has been replaced with 711, which is the New York Relay service, commonly used by the hearing-impaired population in New York.
We encourage all our customers to be aware of potential fraudulent attempts, and to always reach out to us when exceptions in normal operations happen. RG&E will continue to take every action possible to protect our customers.
