RG&E To Start Work Repairing Historic Streetlights in Brighton in November

Crews will repair two circuits, more than 250 light fixtures

Upgrades will replace 100-year-old lighting circuits

Improve system reliability and conditions for pedestrians

ROCHESTER, NY — October 15, 2024 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) will begin making upgrades to streetlight circuits in the Town of Brighton in November. RG&E will be replacing two historic streetlight circuits that have been in operation for almost 100 years, upgrading more than 250 streetlights between Monroe and Highland Avenue.

“We recognize that having reliable street lighting is paramount for the pedestrians who need it,” said Michael Miranda, projects unit manager for NYSEG and RG&E. “There are many residents who walk along Monroe Avenue to get to religious services regularly, and we want to ensure that all residents have visibility as they are using sidewalks.”

RG&E has worked with the community and the Brighton Historic Preservation Committee to install special lighting that will maintain the existing historical appearance and style of the streetlights in the area. Incandescent arc bulbs will be upgraded to modern LED bulbs, improving system reliability. The modernized lighting will help improve conditions for pedestrians.

As lighting technology has developed over the past century, the availability of replacement parts and equipment to operate the existing system has declined as many operators retrofit their systems with new, modern technology. These upgrades will make it easier to replace parts, which will help reduce supply chain issues that can impact repair time.

RG&E will replace 650 lights across six circuits in the Town of Brighton and the Village of Pittsford over the next few years. These investments are part of the Company’s commitment to improve service and reliability.
