RG&E to Honor Service Members with Commemoration of Plaque on Veterans Day

Media is invited to ceremony

Event will pay tribute to George Becker, an RG&E retiree and NYS Veterans Hall of Fame inductee

ROCHESTER, NY — November 8, 2024 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) will honor the legacy of service members in the Rochester community on Veterans Day. The Company is holding a ceremony on Monday, November 11 at the Scottsville Road facility at noon to commemorate an historic plaque that was recently moved to the Company’s Scottsville Road facility.

“Veterans Day is a special occasion to remember those who selflessly served our country,” said Trish Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “Veterans are an essential part of our workforce, and it’s an honor to work alongside them.”

The plaque lists the names of RG&E employees who served our country during World War II and is in memory of eight employees who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s being moved to a location where it will be more visible to employees. This effort was made possible by AVAN-Veterans, one of the many business resource groups within the Company. The group consists of Avangrid military veterans, families, and allies passionate about advancing and supporting veterans in our company, across the communities we serve, and beyond. The plaque will be unveiled and veterans will raise the POW/MIA flags, which will fly for the remainder of the month.

The ceremony will also recognize 99-year-old Mr. George Becker, a New York State Veterans Hall of Fame inductee and RG&E retiree. Mr. Becker enlisted in the Navy on November 23, 1942, at the age of 17. He achieved the rank of Electrician’s Mate Second Class. In August 1943, Becker shipped out to Treasure Island in California and was assigned to the commissioning crew of the USS Emery, a destroyer escort. The USS Emery would later depart in October 1943 for the South Pacific where Becker and his fellow sailors were a part of escort missions during the war. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for his services. Upon his return to Rochester, Mr. Becker was hired by RG&E where he started as a Hydro Generator Operator, before ending his career as manager of Energy Dispatch. He retired from the Company in 1987, completing 41 years of service.
