RG&E Helps “Light Up the Night” with Rochester Police to Distribute 2,000 Energy Efficiency Kits

Dusk-to-dawn lightbulbs will help deter crime in light of car break-ins around the city

The Company to hand out lightbulbs at Public Market and Public Safety Building

ROCHESTER, NY — October 27, 2023 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) and the Rochester Police Department (RPD) today announced a new initiative to help increase safety and security in the community. The “Light Up the Night” program will provide 2,000 “dusk-to-dawn” lightbulbs to Rochesterians. RG&E and members of the RPD will hand out energy efficiency kits at the public market Saturday, October 28 and in November at the Rochester Public Safety Building. The kits are beneficial for lighting doorsteps or front entrances of residences. These bulbs are designed for better illumination as soon as the sun sets. The kits will include “dusk-to-dawn” lightbulbs, door sweeps, power strips, and faucet and shower head extenders.

“It’s important that RG&E is a good neighbor,” said Marc Barraco, program manager of Government and Community Relations for RG&E and NYSEG. “Part of being a good neighbor is not only making sure our customers are safe but providing something that contributes to safer neighborhoods. These energy efficiency lightbulbs do that and help customers reduce their energy usage.”

Research suggests that a small change in a neighborhood’s environment, such as adding lighting, can make an impact on reducing crime. When researchers partnered with the NYPD to place lighting in some of the city’s highest crime areas, they found that serious crimes dropped 60 percent in those areas over six months. The city of Rochester has been plagued with numerous car break-ins and thefts.

“We’re proud to partner with RG&E in its campaign to brighten our neighborhoods with energy efficient, dusk-to-dawn lightbulbs,” said David Smith, chief of the Rochester Police Department. “This is a great example of businesses across our community coming together to make our city a safer place.”

Residents can pick up their energy efficiency kits while supplies last at the following locations:

Saturday, October 28 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Rochester Public Market, 280 Union St., N.
Thursday, November 9 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rochester Public Safety Building, 185 Exchange Blvd.
