RG&E Clean Heat Program Funds Geothermal Energy Network in Rochester
Renewable energy source will heat and cool apartment units at former Hickey Freeman building in Rochester
Part of the Company’s commitment to clean energy goals in New York State
ROCHESTER, NY — February 27, 2024 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) is supporting a geothermal energy project in Rochester. This environmentally focused alternative system will heat and cool Home Leasing apartment units in the former Hickey Freeman manufacturing building.
This is one of RG&E’s largest projects in its Clean Heat Program. 92 wells were drilled which will heat and cool 134 affordable apartments for low-income older adults. The project started in October 2022 and residents are expected to move in starting in 2025.
“We are very grateful to RG&E and the Clean Heat Program for their support of the installation of our geothermal system at Tailor Square,” said Bret Garwood, CEO of Home Leasing. “The efficient heating and cooling will help us maintain comfortable and affordable apartments for seniors in Rochester.”
Geothermal heat pumps (or ground-source heat pumps) take heat from the underground wells and use it to warm water. That water holds onto the heat until it gets pumped into the building to warm the air. This system is one of the most efficient types of heat pumps.
“Geothermal heat pumps are being utilized to replace the former natural gas heating system that would have heated the new redeveloped multifamily section of the building,” said RG&E Key Accounts Manager, Aaron Calcagno. “This project is an example of building electrification.”
RG&E will provide more than $400,000 in geothermal incentives to Home Leasing through its Clean Heat Program, which supports residential and commercial clean heating and cooling solutions. Supporting projects like this are one of the many ways the Company is making advancements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, taking steps toward clean energy goals in New York State.
