NYSEG/RG&E Program to Help Customers Lower AC Costs, Reduce Overall Power Use During Extreme Heat
Rochester, NY – NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, have launched an innovative Control Your Savings program to help residential and small-business customers manage air conditioning costs and, working with NYSEG and RG&E, reduce overall electricity use during periods of extreme heat to help ensure the reliability of the electricity grid.
The Control Your Savings program is currently available to residential and small-business customers with plug-in air conditioners in portions of NYSEG’s Brewster and Lancaster service areas and to RG&E customers on certain circuits in Victor and Farmington in Ontario County. NYSEG and RG&E expect to make the Control Your Savings program available to all residential and small-business customers in 2016.
“This program aligns with Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision initiative by engaging our customers to use energy more efficiently and reduce peak consumption periods to lessen the need for investment in new facilities,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “We look forward to continuing to work with our customers on opportunities for energy savings and realizing the environmental benefits of reduced energy use.”
Here’s how the Control Your Savings program works:
- Participants will be able to monitor and control their plug-in air conditioner’s energy use with a free ThinkEco smartAC kit that communicates with smartphones and through home Internet service. Participants will receive a $25 gift card for each smartAC kit they successfully set up.
- Participants will be helping to ensure the reliability of the electricity grid: On certain summer days when electricity use is expected to be particularly high, smartAC units will reset plug-in air conditioners to a slightly higher temperature or turn them on and off intermittently to reduce overall electricity consumption.
