NYSEG AND RG&E CUSTOMERS PURCHASED MORE THAN 68 MILLION KILOWATT-HOURS OF WIND ENERGY IN 2013

Rochester, NY – In 2013, customers of NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, bought more than 68.3 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of clean, renewable wind energy – enough to power more than 4,000 typical homes for a year – through the companies’ Catch the Wind program.

At NYSEG, 2013 sales of Catch the Wind renewable energy were approximately 50.1 million kwh and at RG&E 2013 sales were approximately 18.3 million kwh. At the close of 2013, more than 14,000 NYSEG customers and more than 5,200 RG&E customers were enrolled in the program.

“Making clean, renewable wind energy available to our customers is a natural fit with our commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “We are pleased that after nearly a decade of making wind energy available, our customers continue to support the program.”

Purchasing wind energy directly benefits the environment by reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation right here in New York. The estimated environmental benefits of the 2013 sales of wind energy at NYSEG and RG&E include the reduction of approximately 47,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. That is the equivalent of removing approximately 9,900 passenger vehicles from the road or the carbon sequestered by approximately 38,600 acres of trees. Renewable energy sources also help avoid sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions.

NYSEG’s wind energy program began in August 2002; RG&E’s program began in April 2004. The programs are offered in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a leading developer and marketer of renewable energy.
