Bill Pay Scam

Beware of Bill-Payment Scams – Verify Before You Pay

We continue to learn of fraudulent activities – nationwide and locally – where our customers are contacted and asked to pay current or past due charges; and these “payments” go to scammers. These contacts take place by email, phone or in person. Utility customers can be a convenient target for these scammers because unlike retail business customers, most everyone is a customer of an energy company and pays utility bills.

Take the following precautions to avoid falling victim to a scam:

  • Always type our web address when making an online payment at rge.com, do not rely on email links. While at rge.com, you can also check your account balance and any past-due amount status.
  • When making a payment by phone, always ensure you are dialing our phone numbers: 800.743.2110 (customer service); 877.266.3492 (payment arrangements) or 800.295.7323 (self-service line). You can also check your account status by phone. Do not make any payments over the phone to anyone who has contacted you or asked you to dial a different number.
  • Pay by credit card using our web link; again, do not trust email links.
  • If you are mailing your payment, our address is:
    RG&E
    P.O. Box 847813
    Boston, MA 02284-7813
  • Pay in person at an authorized pay agent, a Walmart location or one of RG&E’s walk-in office locations.
  • If you pay your bill using your own payment service (for instance, your bank) always follow the payment service’s instructions to ensure your account security.
  • Never provide your Social Security number, credit card number or bank information to anyone requesting it (over the phone or in person) unless you initiated the contact and feel confident that the transaction is legitimate.
  • You can easily verify the identity of any RG&E employee: ask for their photo ID card (if in person) or their employee number. Then contact us at 800.743.2110 to verify their identity and the nature of their business. Our employees are happy to comply with an identity verification request.
  • We do not ask customers to purchase debit cards (like Green Dot cards) to make payments.

Want to avoid payment scams entirely and keep current on your RG&E bills?

Consider enrolling in our Autopay service, where your amount due will be automatically deducted from your bank account each month. You can learn more about this service on our website, or on the back of your RG&E bill payment stub.

Remember, if something sounds too good to be true or information about your account balance doesn’t match what you expect, it probably isn't true. It pays to protect yourself from scams. If you have fallen victim to a scam, immediately contact the Federal Trade Commission and your local police.
