Brighton Arc Lighting Conversion

As part of our commitment to provide safe, reliable service to all our customers, Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E), in conjunction with our parent company – Avangrid, is updating the delivery system in our service areas.

While making investments to meet the community’s needs, we are working closely with our neighbors to ensure that all improvements are performed with minimal disruption to the environment and the communities we serve.

Project Purpose and Need

The Town of Brighton has serval historic streetlight circuits that are owned and operated by RG&E.  These circuits operate on unique Arc Lighting circuits which have been in operation for 100 years.

As lighting technology has rapidly developed over the past century, the availability of replacement parts and equipment to operate the existing system has declined as many operators retrofit their systems with new, modern technology. RG&E Operations crews have already restored/converted some circuits in the area, the RG&E Projects team will be converting the remaining six Arc lighting systems to their modern LED equivalents.

Upgrade Project Scope Includes

  • Replacement of all fixtures, with new, to accept LED lights. There are approximately 650 lights across all 6 circuits (5 in the Town of Brighton and 1 in the Village of Pittsford).
  • Installation of new infrastructure including new Transformers, Manholes, Duct/Conduit, Conductor, and Handholes where needed.
  • Replacement of heavily damaged poles, including the historic fluted concrete poles and steel davit arm light structures.

Regional Benefits

  • This project will maintain the existing historical appearance and style of the streetlighting circuits in the area.
  • Incandescent arc bulbs will be upgraded to modern LED equivalent bulbs, improving system reliability.
  • Replacement parts will be easier to acquire, which will help reduce supply chain issues that impact repair time.
  • The modernized lighting system will help improve conditions for pedestrians.
