NYSEG and RG&E Prepared to Meet Customer Needs During Weekend Weather

Companies Ready to Meet Warm Weather Challenges

BINGHAMTON, NY – July 19, 2019 (3:00 p.m. EST)

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of AVANGRID Inc., announced today that the companies have taken measures to prepare the electric grid for the increased customer usage that is expected as temperatures rise throughout the upcoming weekend.

“NYSEG and RG&E are well-prepared to meet the needs of customers during the upcoming heatwave,” said Patricia Nilsen, Director of Emergency Preparedness for the companies. “Both companies have proactively worked to ensure that the electric system is prepared to handle the increased demand and that additional staffing is in place to meet any challenges that we may face as a result of the expected weather.”

Among the actions taken by the companies, non-emergency repairs and construction have been postponed to ensure needed power lines are available and in-service to meet customer demand. The companies have also increased staffing within their control center operations and have activated additional line crews to ensure a swift response should an outage occur. NYSEG and RG&E operations, in conjunction with the New York ISO, will continue to monitor the electric system around-the-clock in the coming days as the warm weather continues.

In addition to preparing the electric system for the weather ahead, both NYSEG and RG&E offer hot-weather conservation and safety tips, including:

  • During daylight hours, close curtains or shades to reduce penetration of heat into the home.
  • Make sure air-conditioner filters are clean and debris has been removed.
  • Turn off air conditioners when leaving home for extended periods of time.
  • Set your thermostat to a slightly warmer temperature if health permits.
  • Whenever possible, delay using major appliances such as pool pumps, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers until after 8 p.m.
  • Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
