NYSEG AND RG&E CREWS MAKE PROGRESS IN RESTORING POWER

Rochester, NY –  August 10, 2009 – NYSEG and RG&E crews continue to make progress in restoring electricity service to more than 20,000 customers in the companies’ Lancaster Division and Fillmore District.   Several severe thunderstorms moved through the area on Sunday and earlier today, causing extensive damage to the companies’ distribution system.  Approximately 1,800 customers remain without power in NYSEG’s Lancaster Division, with the majority of these customers in the towns of Wales, Concord and Aurora.  The remainder are scattered throughout the counties of Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus. The majority of customers are expected to have service restored by 9 pm this evening, barring any new outages this afternoon or evening.  In RG&E’s Fillmore District, approximately 2,400 customers remain without service.  The areas with the most customers without power are Angelica and Belfast in Allegany County.  The customers in these areas are expected to be restored by 9 pm this evening, barring any new outages. Electricity service is expected to be restored to the majority of the remaining customers by Tuesday evening. 

“We appreciate our customers’ patience as we go about our work restoring power to those impacted by strong, multiple storms that rumbled through the western and central portion of the state,” said Bill Ransom, director of regional operations.  

Customers are reminded that downed power lines are dangerous. Even power lines that appear “dead” may be deadly.   Downed wires should be immediately reported to NYSEG (1.800-572.1131) or RG&E (1.800.743.1701). Customers should also be reminded that they should not enter flooded basements.
